EV-BOY Connect is provided by EV-BOY Limited ("we" or "us") for iPhone and Android phones. This policy explains what data the app uses, where it's kept, what you can control and how this website uses Google Analytics.
No account needed
You don't need to sign up or sign in, and you don't need a Tesla account. We don't know who you are unless you email us.
Data kept on your phone
The following is stored on your phone and is never sent to us, except in a problem report you choose to send:
- what the app reads from your car over Bluetooth: charging status, battery level, energy added, odometer and the location your car reports;
- your car's VIN and model;
- your charging history and reports, including charges you add yourself;
- the home electricity rate you enter;
- the digital key used to connect to your car, which is created on your phone;
- the last 48 hours of diagnostic logs (see "Problem reports").
The app doesn't use your phone's location and doesn't ask for location permission. The place of each charge comes from your car over Bluetooth, and is used to tell home charges from public ones and to look up prices.
Your charging history and digital key are included in your own iCloud or Google backup. On iPhone, your charging history may be included in your iCloud or computer backups, and if iCloud Keychain is on, the digital key syncs through it. On Android, if your phone has a screen lock, your charging history and digital key are included in your Google backup, and Android's device-to-device transfer also moves them to a new phone. No other app data is included in Android backups.
Public charging prices
When a public charge needs a price, the app sends the following to EV-BOY's price lookup service (maps.ev-boy.com) over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), to find the published price at that place and time:
- the coordinates of the charging location;
- the time charging started;
- AC or DC, and the charging power in kW.
The app never sends your VIN, the energy charged, an account or anything else that identifies you. The request is used only to return a price and is not logged or stored. Like any website, our servers record basic technical details such as IP address, request path and time to keep the service reliable and secure.
Home charges are never looked up. The app prices them from the home rate you set.
To let you choose or change the charger, the app also downloads the public charger list from the same service. That download sends no location and nothing that identifies you; nearby chargers are filtered on your phone.
Problem reports
To help us track down Bluetooth and logging issues, the app keeps the last 48 hours of diagnostic logs on your phone. They record when the app connected to your car, Bluetooth signal strength, what was read, error codes, and the charging status and battery level it read. The logs stay on your phone and are deleted automatically after 48 hours.
We only receive anything when you describe a problem in Settings › Report a problem, tap Open email and send it from your own email app to info [at] ev-boy.com. The email includes:
- your description and your email address;
- the app version, phone model and system version;
- permission status;
- your car model and the last 6 characters of its VIN;
- the last 48 hours of diagnostic logs;
- for each charge on the phone: start and end time, location coordinates, AC or DC, and whether it matched home, a station or nothing.
The app itself does not send location. Only the problem report you send includes charge-location coordinates, which are used to check station matching. Problem reports never contain costs, charging station names, car keys or encrypted content. You can review everything in the app and in the email before you send it. We use it only to fix the problem you reported and to reply to you, and we delete it once the problem is resolved.
Usage statistics
The version from the App Store or Google Play sends anonymous usage statistics to Google (Google Analytics), so we can see which features people use and improve the app. The statistics include which screens you open, setup progress, whether pairing with the car succeeded (and why not), which features you use (such as CSV export, adding a charge or entering a cost), which settings you change, and your phone's system, app version, app language and number of cars (0, 1, or 2 or more). They don't include energy, cost, charging stations, location, VIN, car name or car model.
The app has no ads, no advertising identifier, and doesn't track you across apps. These statistics aren't linked to your identity. Google assigns a random id to this installation to count how many phones use the app. Reinstalling replaces that id. The id isn't an advertising identifier. Google uses the connection's IP address to derive a coarse area and doesn't store the IP. Usage statistics are kept for up to 2 months.
Builds used for development and testing send nothing. There is no switch in the app to turn these statistics off.
This website
This website (connect.ev-boy.com) uses Google Analytics cookies to collect anonymous, aggregated usage statistics, such as pages visited and general interactions, so we can improve the site. These statistics don't identify you. The website has no ads. Website statistics are separate from the app and include nothing from the app.
See how Google uses information from sites that use its services. To opt out, install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
This website also remembers your language choice in your browser. That setting stays in your browser and isn't sent to anyone.
Permissions
- Bluetooth: to connect to and read your car.
- Notifications: to show alerts about your charging records.
- On Android, Nearby devices, foreground service and companion device permissions let the app read charging data in the background while you're near the car.
Keeping and deleting data
- Settings › Clear records on this phone deletes your charging history and diagnostic logs right away.
- Uninstalling the app deletes everything it stores on your phone. Copies in your iCloud, iCloud Keychain or Google backup aren't deleted.
- Removing a car in the app doesn't remove the key from the car. You can delete it from the car's key list.
- We delete problem reports once the problem is resolved.
Your rights
Although we don't collect personal data that identifies you, under Hong Kong's Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance you can still ask to access or correct any personal data we may hold about you, or ask us to delete it. To do so, email info [at] ev-boy.com.
Security
All connections between the app and our servers use HTTPS. Data on your phone is kept in the app's private storage and protected by your phone's operating system.
Children
EV-BOY Connect is not intended for children, and we don't knowingly collect children's personal data.
Changes to this policy
If we update this policy, we'll change the effective date above. For significant changes, we'll let you know in the app or on this website.
